Paisley Blackhawks held their
second invitational tournament at the Dumfries Ice Bowl on Saturday
14th & Sunday 15th May.
The Blackhawks were the winners
back in 2009, an event which saw 10 teams participate and which was
supported not only by friends and family, but hockey fans from all
walks of life. 2011 was no exception, and the Blackhawks were proud
to put on the tournament this year.
With only half the teams competing
this time around, this meant that the format and running time of the
event could be prolonged and adapted to suit the teams and the game
better, as it allowed for ice cuts between the games and longer
periods. In true hockey fashion, it was not an easy ride for the
players or teams competing. It was a display of true passion and
grit determination, with some teams running short benches.
Full credit to Ayr Lions who played
all their games with a maximum of 8 skaters!
Now that’s what you call dedicated!
Unfortunately it was not the
Blackhawks year and they missed out on top spot. The winners this
year were the Northern Ireland Prowlers and the runners up were the
Newcastle Coyotes.
The games were fast paced and
showed that good quality hockey is still alive and well at
recreational level. There were plenty of goals,
no major penalties and the
officiating was just as it should be, fair! The referees and
linesman did a great job at officiating the matches, and not turning
it into a “3 horse race” on the ice! All in all it was a great
weekend for everyone involved and attending.
Brian Murdoch who led the
Blackhawks team in organising the event said “Thank you to Northern
Ireland Prowlers, Newcastle Coyotes, Ayr Lions & Irvine Flyers for a
good weekend of hockey, we are already looking forward to the next
Paisley Blackhawks Tournament that will be held in Dumfries in 2012
during the Blackhawk's 20th anniversary season.
We would also like to thanks the
various sponsors, friends and family who made this event possible by
giving the club their support either by a financial contribution or
donating raffle prizes. The company logos appear on our
tournament page.
Lastly, thanks to Gillian, the
Turnbulls and Amanda for their endless work off the ice over the
weekend."
Well Done Northern Ireland Prowlers on winning the event.
